- Activist Aisha Yesufu believes the government assumes Nigerians are not facing hardship because many of those struggling the most continue to defend the current administration.
- She argued that this disconnect makes it easy for leaders to dismiss citizens’ complaints about economic hardship.
- Yesufu also cited lawyer Inibehe Effiong, noting the irony of people defending a government that has worsened their living conditions.

Political activist Aisha Yesufu has shared her thoughts on why the government might think Nigerians are not experiencing hardship despite the country’s worsening economic situation.
In a post on her verified X handle on Saturday, Yesufu argued that those feeling the brunt of the hardship are ironically the ones defending the current administration.
She wrote: “Why won’t the government say Nigerians are lying when they say there is suffering in the land? The same people suffering are the ones at the forefront of defending the government.”
Nigerians have continued to lament the escalating cost of living since President Bola Tinubu took office on May 29, 2023. During his inauguration, Tinubu announced the removal of fuel subsidy — a policy that has since affected nearly every sector of the economy.
Quoting human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, Yesufu, who co-founded the BringBackOurGirls movement, added: “It is baffling that a person that does not have N1 million to pay his house rent is defending a regime that has wrecked the country’s economy and impoverished Nigerians.”
