  • The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has affirmed that former President Goodluck Jonathan remains a member of the party.
  • PDP spokesperson Debo Ologunagba clarified on Arise TV that Jonathan has not resigned, despite rumours linking him to the 2027 presidential race.
  • He also declined to comment on speculation about Peter Obi’s return, but stressed the PDP’s strength, noting that leaders like Governor Seyi Makinde and other performing governors demonstrate the party’s capacity to lead Nigeria.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has clarified that former President Goodluck Jonathan remains a member of the party despite speculations about his political future.

Speaking on Wednesday during an appearance on Arise Television’s Morning Show, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, dismissed claims that Jonathan had dumped the party, stressing:

“President Jonathan is still a member of this party because he has not resigned.”

The clarification comes amid growing rumours that the former president could be drafted as the PDP’s presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general election. Jonathan himself has yet to publicly confirm or deny any interest in the race.

When asked about speculations surrounding the possible return of former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, Ologunagba declined to comment. He explained:

“Mr Peter Obi was a presidential candidate in the last election for another political party. He has not indicated interest in joining the party. So for me, it will be improper for me to begin to comment on that.”

Highlighting the party’s current strength, the PDP spokesman expressed confidence in the pool of leaders available to contest in 2027.

“What I can comment on is our capacity, even as we stand, that we have exceedingly qualified individuals. You mentioned Governor Makinde, of course, that’s one of our poster boys in this party in terms of performance, in terms of capacity, in terms of being able to galvanize Nigerians.

“So for us, we have in this party today various eminently qualified Nigerians and governors who are performing, and Nigeria can recognize that PDP states remain oasis of development centers in this country.”
