A prison inmate, Bright Ngene of the Labour Party (LP), has been declared winner of the rerun election for Enugu South 1 State Constituency held on Saturday, August 16, 2025.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the result, confirming that Ngene, a legal practitioner currently serving a jail term at Enugu Prison, emerged victorious.

Ngene had been sentenced by an Enugu South Magistrates Court, presided over by E. D. Onwu, in a case involving a N15m community development fund. Despite his incarceration, the LP fielded him for the rerun.

INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of its Information & Voter Education Committee, Samuel Olumeku, declared Ngene as the winner.

“Two re-run elections by order of the Election Petition Appeal Tribunals were held in Enugu and Kano States. After previous disruptions of the elections in the two States by violence and thuggery, the elections have now been concluded. Declaration and return were made by the Returning Officers. For the Enugu South 1 State Constituency of Enugu State, Ngene Bright Emeka of the Labour Party (LP) was declared winner,” Olumeku said.

Rex Achumie, INEC’s spokesperson in Enugu, also confirmed Ngene’s declaration to LEADERSHIP.
