A Nigerian man has been arrested for allegedly faking his own abduction in an attempt to extort money from his family to sponsor a planned trip.
Investigations revealed that he contracted another man to act as the kidnapper, instructing him to pretend to be Hausa and speak in a fake accent during the staged incident.
The matter came to public attention after a video surfaced on X (formerly Twitter), showing the supposed victim tied up while a background voice spoke in a forced Hausa accent.
The case was traced to Delta State, leading activist Harrison Gwamnishu and security operatives to launch an inquiry. Their findings confirmed that the man had masterminded the fake kidnap with the intention of demanding ransom from his relatives.
When confronted, he admitted: “I’m sorry, I never meant to. I didn’t know it would lead to this extent. I thought it was just something they’d stage for me, I would travel, then come back and apologize to them.”
His accomplice, who faked the accent in the clip, was also paraded and asked to repeat the same lines he used in the staged video.
The revelation has since gone viral, triggering widespread criticism and shock from Nigerians online.
