A Nigerian father has accused a hospital in Benin City of infecting his 19-month-old child with HIV following two blood transfusions at the facility.
The father shared his experience in a TikTok post, featuring himself alongside documents allegedly obtained from the hospital.
The child was initially admitted on February 6, 2025, suffering from a high fever and dangerously low blood levels. The hospital recommended an urgent blood transfusion, which the parents approved and paid ₦40,000 to secure the blood.
On May 3, 2025, when the child’s health deteriorated further, the family returned to the hospital. Doctors again advised a transfusion. Although the parents offered to donate their own blood, the hospital refused, citing a lack of staff to properly screen the sample. The family was then required to buy another unit of blood for ₦35,000.
Later, a physician at a government hospital diagnosed the child, Jeremiah, with HIV. The father, Praise Mumbo, claims the infection occurred during the transfusions at Safe Bliss Medical Center, a private hospital in Benin City, and is pursuing justice, describing the situation as medical negligence.
The story has sparked significant reactions on social media, with many expressing outrage and demanding a thorough investigation into the incident.
