Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has addressed the controversy surrounding his role in the newly announced coalition led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Speaking on Friday at the flag-off of the Labour Party’s governorship campaign in Anambra State, Obi emphasized that he remains firmly with the Labour Party.

During the event, which introduced LP candidate Dr. George Moghalu and his running mate Lady Ifeoma Okaro, Obi made it clear that although he is involved in the coalition, it does not mean he has left the party.

“Let me put it categorically clear, I and the National Assembly members of the Labour Party are part of the coalition that has adopted ADC for the 2027 election, and other parties will join us,” he stated.

He continued, “But today, we are members of the Labour Party. If anybody asks you which party Peter Obi belongs to today, tell him Peter Obi is in Labour Party. If anybody asks you about the coalition, tell him the coalition is for 2027.”

Obi also used the opportunity to reiterate his presidential ambition for the 2027 elections, expressing confidence in his capability.

“Everyone has the right to run for president; I won’t stop anyone. But if anyone asks, let them know I am in the race, and no one does it better than me,” he declared.

The campaign event aimed to garner support for the Labour Party’s candidate, George Moghalu, who promised a leadership guided by accountability and reverence for God. He also addressed concerns about tax enforcement in the state.

“Although my administration will ask people to pay tax, we will never unleash pestle-wielding touts on the good people of the state,” Moghalu said.

Labour Party State Chairman, Ugochukwu Emeh, also spoke at the event, stating that the rally was organized to reinforce the party’s grassroots reach and reaffirm its dedication to justice, quality governance, and people-oriented policies.
