President Bola Tinubu has reportedly brokered a deal to resolve the political crisis in Rivers State, with major conditions placed on Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
According to TheCable, one key condition is that Fubara must not seek re-election in 2027. The truce was reached on June 26 in a closed-door meeting involving Tinubu, Fubara, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, and members of the suspended Rivers State House of Assembly.
As part of the deal, Wike will nominate all local government chairpersons in the state, giving him grassroots control.
Fubara also agreed to pay outstanding benefits to the 27 pro-Wike lawmakers who defected to the APC. In return, they will drop any impeachment plans against him.
The move is part of a broader effort by Tinubu to restore political stability in Rivers, even if it means Fubara giving up significant power to remain in office.
“The arrangement is clear: no second term, no local government control, and peace will return.’ a source said
Another source was quoted as saying
‘’The president made it clear that Rivers cannot afford a prolonged crisis. The deal is about restoring calm, but it comes at a steep cost for Fubara. Wike is the real winner here. By controlling the local government chairmen, he retains significant influence over the state’s political machinery, which will be crucial for 2027.”
