Grammy-winning singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has expressed concern about how women are treated in the Nigerian music industry.
Speaking in a recent interview with BBC, the Love Me Jeje hitmaker said women are not given the respect they deserve in the industry.
She recalled that at the start of her career, she found it difficult to be taken seriously because of her gender.
“People don’t really respect women in the [music] industry,” Tems stated.
Tems explained that she hopes to “change the way women see themselves in music” through her new project, The Leading Vibe Initiative, which aims to give women easier access to platforms, a wider audience, and more success.
Offering advice to upcoming female artists, she urged them to be clear about their goals, brand identity, and boundaries: “What are the things that you wouldn’t do for fame and the things that you would do?”
Her comments come as other female Nigerian stars, such as Tiwa Savage and Yemi Alade, have also spoken out about the gender-based challenges they face in the music scene.
