Wole Soyinka Slams Trump’s Threat Of Military Action In Nigeria

  • Wole Soyinka, a Nobel laureate, criticized U.S. President Donald Trump’s comments about potentially sending troops to Nigeria.
  • Soyinka described Trump’s remarks as reckless and disconnected from Nigeria’s actual security issues.
  • He emphasized that Trump’s perspective reflects a fixed and uninformed understanding of Nigeria’s internal challenges.

Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka has taken a firm stance against U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent warning about possibly sending American troops to Nigeria, calling the comment reckless and out of touch with the country’s security realities.

After meeting with Governor Hyacinth Alia in Makurdi, Soyinka said Trump’s remarks showed a fixed and uninformed mindset about Nigeria’s internal problems.

He noted that foreign involvement in local security issues should never be announced casually, adding that the confrontational tone of Trump’s threat failed to acknowledge the complexity of Nigeria’s situation.

According to Soyinka, “You don’t just open your mouth and say, ‘I’m coming to help you whether you like it or not. With poor, almost non-existent analysis, you say you are coming with ‘guns blazing.’”

He emphasized that while the government has the duty to safeguard its citizens, respect must still be shown to those affected and to those working to resolve the crisis.

“At least respect those finding solutions to this unacceptable situation,” he said.

Soyinka added that needing assistance does not mean accepting help from someone acting without reason.

“Because I’m ill or have difficulties does not mean I should accept aid from a m@d man. You cannot just open your mouth and say you’re coming to help someone with viølence, without any real analysis of where the problem started.”
