  • He identifies as a Christian and was raised in a Christian household.
  • Despite his beliefs, he does not attend church.

American rapper Clifford Joseph Harris Jr., popularly known as T.I., has shared his reasons for not attending church despite identifying as a Christian.

The Atlanta-born artist explained that although he was raised in a deeply Christian home and firmly believes in God, he does not feel connected to the church as an institution, which he views as being overly commercialised.

Speaking during a recent conversation with gospel singer Kirk Franklin, T.I. criticised some Christian leaders, accusing them of misinterpreting scripture and taking advantage of their followers for personal gain.

According to him, his upbringing exposed him to strong faith practices, as his grandmother and aunt were devoted to prayer. He said this background helped him understand the Bible and develop a personal relationship with God, adding that he has experienced God’s presence in his life. However, he maintained that he has never truly resonated with organised church worship.

The rapper went further to describe the modern church as more of a business or performance, comparing it to public speaking engagements, and claimed that some clergy manipulate biblical teachings to serve their own interests.

T.I. also questioned the idea that financial contributions such as tithes are necessary for receiving God’s blessings. He expressed disbelief at the notion that he must give money before his prayers can be answered.

In addition, he stated that he does not believe a clergy member should act as a mediator between him and God, stressing that his faith is personal and does not require an intermediary.
