The Meta-owned messaging platform is currently testing a new feature that would allow users to connect and chat without revealing their phone numbers — a move seen as one of its biggest privacy upgrades yet.

Similar to systems used on Instagram, Telegram, and X, the feature will let users create unique usernames to message others and join groups without exposing their personal contact details. This aims to boost privacy, especially in large communities and business interactions where sharing phone numbers can be sensitive.

Leaked screenshots show a new “Username” option in user profiles, allowing people to choose custom handles and control whether their phone numbers remain visible.

Experts, however, have cautioned that the change could bring challenges like username hijacking and impersonation. To counter this, WhatsApp is expected to introduce verification and additional security layers alongside the rollout.

Although still in development, the feature could fundamentally change how over two billion users connect on WhatsApp — shifting the focus from phone numbers to usernames.
