“What We Passed Is Not What Was Gazetted”-Lawmaker Alleges New Tax Laws Were Altered After Passage

  • Hon. Abdulsammad Dasuki, a member of the House of Representatives, has alleged that Nigeria’s newly passed tax laws were altered after lawmakers approved them.
  • In a viral video, he claimed the version gazetted into law is different from what the National Assembly voted on, describing it as a constitutional breach.
  • The accusation has triggered public outrage and legal debate, with lawyers and citizens warning that, if proven, it could amount to an impeachable offense.

A member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abdulsammad Dasuki, has sparked widespread anger after claiming that the new tax laws were secretly changed after they were passed by lawmakers.

In a viral video, he alleged that the version of the law officially published is completely different from the one the National Assembly actually voted on.

During a heated session, Dasuki complained to his colleagues, saying, “Mister Speaker, honorable colleagues, what was passed on this floor is not what is gazetted. I gave my vote, and it was counted, and I’m seeing something completely different.”

He insisted that these were not simple errors but a major legal violation, adding, “This is a breach of the Constitution and our laws, and this should not be taken by this Honorable House.”

The allegations have led to serious legal concerns across Nigeria. Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong stated on social media that if these claims are true, “This is an impeachable offense.” Another social media user, Obiasogu David, shared a similar view, writing, “If this is true, then the government has committed a constitutional fraud.”

While Speaker Tajudeen Abbas has promised to look into the matter, many Nigerians are already expressing their distrust. On X (formerly Twitter), a user known as OurFaveOnlineDoc alleged that “the presidency just played the National Assembly as fools. This is a total new low for this country.”

As of now, the presidency has not yet released a statement to address these heavy accusations.
