Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has formally apologized to Nigerians following the national team’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The apology comes just weeks after Nigeria lost a decisive playoff final against DR Congo, ending their hopes of participating in the global tournament.

Speaking in Fès ahead of Nigeria’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) opening match against Tanzania, the Galatasaray star acknowledged the pain felt by the supporters. “We have to use this opportunity to say we are so sorry for not getting the World Cup ticket. We know the disappointment in the faces of Nigerian fans, it has happened, and we have to keep it going,” Osimhen stated.

The reigning African Footballer of the Year described the upcoming AFCON tournament as a critical chance for redemption. He emphasized the team’s desire to rebuild trust with the global fanbase through their performance on the pitch.

“The expectations are very high. This AFCON is an opportunity for us to try and write our wrongs… Make the Super Eagles fans all over the world believe that there is so much more we can give. We are so sorry,” he added.

The Super Eagles are set to face Tanzania on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, as they begin their quest for a fourth continental title.
