New information has surfaced regarding the final days of Nigerian gospel singer Bunmi Akinnaanu, widely known as Omije Ojumi, who passed away on Monday, January 12, 2026, at a hospital in Lagos.

Lanre Alewilese, a close friend and collaborator of the late singer, shared a heartfelt account of her last moments. He revealed that in the weeks before her passing, Omije Ojumi was unable to speak or open her eyes, underscoring the severity of her illness.

Alewilese explained that he chose not to disclose the worsening state of her health to the public in order to spare fans from unnecessary distress. He added that seeing her in such pain was deeply difficult, and sharing updates would not have offered any hope.

Speaking in Yoruba, he said:

“…In the final weeks before Omije Ojumi passed away, she could neither open her eyes nor speak. I kept her condition private because there was nothing positive to report. I didn’t want to cause unnecessary worry. Watching her struggle was heartbreaking…”
