Nigerian social media commentator Daniel Regha has sparked widespread debate online after criticizing the federal government’s recent decision to reward the Super Falcons with cash and housing gifts.

On July 28, Regha shared his opinion on X (formerly Twitter), calling the gesture an inappropriate use of public funds. He acknowledged the team’s commendable performance in representing Nigeria internationally but questioned the necessity of granting each player $100,000 and a three-bedroom flat.

Regha argued that while celebrating the team’s achievements is important, the lavish rewards seem excessive, especially amid the country’s ongoing economic hardship. He also noted that the Super Falcons were already entitled to 30% of the WAFCON prize money, making the additional government incentives questionable.

He further expressed concern about the funding source for the rewards, wondering if it would come from taxpayers or loans. Regha highlighted the plight of struggling Nigerians, including civil servants who survive on stagnant wages, describing the government’s decision as tone-deaf to the realities of widespread poverty and financial instability.

In his words:

“Super Falcons did a good job representing Nigeria, but why is Tinubu’s government or administration gifting the players $100k each with an added three-bedroom flat? After the entire team is to get 30 per cent of the prize money? So the cash gifts will be coming from taxpayers’ money or the one borrowed? For a country that’s crippling with poverty, and where civil servants are struggling to make ends meet, how does this even sit well with anyone? Sorry, but this is a misuse of public funds.”
