Former Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan has called on citizens across Africa to remove leaders who fail to deliver, insisting that poor governance should never be rewarded with re-election.
Jonathan, who lost Nigeria’s 2015 presidential race and is rumored to be weighing a 2027 comeback bid against current president Bola Ahmed Tinubu, made the remarks during the 2025 Goodluck Jonathan Foundation (GJF) Democracy Dialogue in Accra, Ghana.
He warned that democratic values on the continent face serious challenges, with electoral fraud posing one of the biggest threats.
“Democracy in Africa is under pressure and risks collapse unless stakeholders unite to rethink and reform it,” he said. “Manipulation of the electoral process remains a major obstacle. When elections are free and fair, non-performing leaders can be voted out. Unfortunately, many cling to power by exploiting weak systems.”
Jonathan outlined citizens’ expectations freedom, credible elections, inclusive governance, quality education, healthcare, security, and jobs and cautioned that neglecting these needs fuels public frustration.
“Our people want dignity and for their votes to count. When leaders fail to provide these basics, they lose the trust of the governed,” he added.
While applauding the increasing participation of young Africans in politics, Jonathan emphasized that youth leaders still need mentorship from seasoned elders. He concluded by urging the creation of political structures that safeguard citizens’ voices and secure a prosperous future for the next generation.
