- The U.S. government has issued a warning to foreign students, including Nigerians, about maintaining their academic programs.
- Neglecting studies may lead to the immediate revocation of student visas.
- The advisory was shared on the official X account of the U.S. Mission in Nigeria.

The United States government has cautioned foreign students studying in the country, including Nigerians, that neglecting their academic programs could result in the immediate revocation of their student visas.
The advisory was issued on Monday via the official X (formerly Twitter) account of the U.S. Mission in Nigeria.
“Failing to attend classes, abandoning your studies, or leaving your program without notifying your school could lead to your student visa being revoked. This may also affect your eligibility for future U.S. visas. To avoid complications, always comply with your visa terms and maintain your student status,” the statement read.
Nigeria Immigration Service Urges Compliance
The warning aligns with an earlier advisory from the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), which urged Nigerian travelers to strictly follow the terms of their U.S. visas. The agency emphasized that immigration checks by U.S. authorities do not end at the port of entry and that violations could result in deportation or visa cancellation.
“All visa holders must abide by the purpose stated in their applications,” NIS said. “Travelers should note that U.S. authorities continue monitoring compliance even after arrival, and any breach of immigration rules can lead to sanctions, including visa withdrawal.”
The agency also reiterated U.S. efforts to curb “birth tourism,” explaining that consular officers may deny tourist visa applications if they suspect the primary reason for travel is to give birth in the U.S. to secure citizenship for the child.
Recent Changes to U.S. Visa Policy for Nigerians
Earlier this year, the U.S. government implemented new visa rules for Nigerian nationals, introducing stricter terms for most nonimmigrant, non-diplomatic visas. Under the new policy, many applicants particularly those seeking business or tourist visas—are now issued single-entry visas valid for three months, replacing the longer multiple-entry permits previously available.
This adjustment represents a major change in the visa reciprocity agreement between both countries and reflects Washington’s broader efforts to strengthen immigration controls.
Visas issued before July 8, 2025, remain valid under their original terms. However, the updated regulations are expected to significantly affect future travelers, especially frequent visitors for business, study, or tourism purposes.
