- The US Embassy in Nigeria has implemented modifications to its visa policy, effective July 8, 2025.
- The US Department of State has reduced Nigerian non-immigrant visa duration from five years to three months, citing reciprocity for similar treatment of American citizens in Nigeria.

The United States Embassy in Nigeria has announced a major change to its visa policy, effective July 8, 2025.
According to the US Department of State, the duration of non-immigrant visas for Nigerian citizens has been reduced from five years to just three months. This decision, the embassy stated, is based on reciprocity, as Nigeria grants American citizens only short-term visas.
The new policy affects several categories of non-immigrant visas, including those for tourism and business which make up a significant portion of visas granted to Nigerians annually.
However, the embassy clarified that existing visas issued before July 8, 2025, remain valid and will not be affected by the new rule.
This update reverses a bilateral agreement signed in March 2023, under which visa validity for Nigerians was extended from two years to five years.
The announcement has sparked reactions online. A user, Adedolapo Daniels, wrote, “They should have stop visa applications outrightly: they are coward! Nigeria will reciprocate that as fast as possible”.
Another user, Kehinde Ade, added, “I like the way Nigeria government are acting indifferent to all these anti-Nigerian policies by Trump administration. Rather than being pained we should make it reciprocal”.
Meanwhile, David Fashola expressed frustration, asking, “I don’t know why Nigerians are rushing to America when other countries are ready to accept us 😡😡😡’.
