A young lady has stirred debate on social media after sharing her perspective on student life at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), pushing back against widespread assumptions about cultism in Nigerian universities.
In a statement that quickly gained traction online, she maintained that although many people believe cult-related activities exist in every higher institution, UNILAG appears to be different.
She explained that the school environment is largely driven by social life and entrepreneurial pursuits, rather than violence or secret group activities. Her comments have since attracted varied reactions from both current students and alumni.
“Everybody is always of the opinion that there are cultists in every university but I don’t know why nobody is coming out to say UNILAG is an exception. UNILAG is more focus on parties and how to make money,” she said.
Her remarks have sparked ongoing discussions, with some agreeing with her stance while others argue that no university can be completely free of such concerns.
Cultism has long been a recurring issue in Nigerian tertiary institutions, including notable incidents such as reported student clashes in 2022 across several campuses.
Analysts note that conversations like this underscore the importance of openness and stronger safety measures within universities nationwide.
