U.S. President Donald Trump has floated the idea of changing the Pentagon’s name from the Department of Defense back to the “Department of War.”
During a meeting at the White House with South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, Trump hinted that the change could happen soon.
“You know, we got the Department of Defense, but I — between us, I think we’re going to change the name,” Trump said in the Oval Office. “Everybody likes that. We had an unbelievable history of victory when it was Department of War. Then we changed it to Department of Defense.”
He argued that the old name better reflected America’s military power and claimed that the U.S. achieved more victories under it.
“That’s a little thing, has nothing to do with your country,” he told Lee, “But it’s something that I think you’re going to be hearing about or seeing about over the next couple of weeks.”
The Department of War, first established in 1789, managed U.S. military affairs for more than 150 years until it was reorganized and officially renamed the Department of Defense in 1949 following World War II.
