The pastor, identified as Abraham Francis Aduh Ojo, was said to be on his way home after attending a church crusade in Makurdi when the incident happened.
Details shared by a relative revealed that he had travelled to the city for a church programme and was heading back when he reportedly ran into armed men operating along the route on Thursday, February 12.
In a Facebook post announcing the heartbreaking news, his nephew, Abuh Richard Enemona, stated that the pastor attempted to flee after encountering the suspected bandits. During the attempt to escape, he was involved in a road accident and died at the scene.
The grieving nephew described his uncle as a devoted pastor who remained committed to his ministry until his passing. He added that the loss has plunged their family and community into deep sorrow.
News of the incident has sparked an outpouring of condolences on social media, with church members and sympathisers expressing shock and offering prayers for the bereaved family.
