One-year-old Amillio Gutierrez tragically died after being left in a hot car by his mother, Maya Hernandez, 20, while she went for a lip filler appointment in Bakersfield, California. His two-year-old brother, also in the car, survived.
Hernandez claimed she left the air conditioning on, but investigators revealed the vehicle’s auto shut-off feature likely left the children in sweltering heat for at least 90 minutes. Amillio had a body temperature of 107°F when found and was declared dead at the hospital.
His grandmother, Katie Martinez, wrote on GoFundMe:
“Amillio was so special; he always had a smile no matter what… His brother will forever be without his best friend.”
She added:
“They were strapped in their car seats. They couldn’t even get up to save themselves.”
Katie also expressed shock, saying:
“She wasn’t like that. She was a really loving mom. Those boys loved her and relied on her.”
Hernandez has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and child cruelty, and is being held on over $1 million bail. A vigil for Amillio was held July 5, as loved ones continue to mourn the heartbreaking loss.
