Nigeria’s Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Wale Edun, has temporarily stepped away from official duties to receive medical care in the United Kingdom.

Sources confirmed that the minister, who had been unwell, left Nigeria earlier in the week after doctors advised further evaluation abroad. Before the trip, Edun was recuperating at his Abuja home, but his condition prompted a move for advanced treatment. He reportedly travelled quietly to London on Monday night.

Presidential officials have dismissed rumours that his health is critical or that he might be replaced. A senior aide said Edun remains in contact with the President and his colleagues.

According to Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the 69-year-old minister is “recovering and in good spirits,” adding that “the government is not considering any change in leadership at the finance ministry.”

He also assured that Edun’s “temporary leave will not affect the nation’s economic planning.”

Meanwhile, Central Bank Governor Olayemi Cardoso will represent Nigeria at the World Bank and IMF meetings in Washington — a role initially assigned to Edun. The Presidency described the arrangement as “a standard substitution,” ensuring Nigeria’s participation remains uninterrupted.

Officials from the Ministry of Finance said all key functions are “running smoothly” in his absence.
