Tanzanian social media personality Jennifer Jovin, widely known as Niffer, has been formally charged with treason, a crime carrying the possibility of life imprisonment or the death penalty, following the release of a short dance video. The clip, which quickly went viral online, featured Niffer performing to a song reportedly mocking President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

Authorities in Tanzania have argued that the video could incite public disorder, leading to the legal proceedings against her. The 26-year-old appeared in Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court in Dar es Salaam alongside 21 other individuals facing similar accusations.

Prosecutors have brought three treason-related charges against the group: conspiracy to commit treason, actions intended to disrupt public order, and incitement via social media.

Niffer’s mother, Mwanaisha Isaac, made a heartfelt appeal to President Hassan for mercy, describing her daughter as a responsible young woman and the family’s primary provider. Her plea has drawn widespread attention, with many Tanzanians taking to social media to express support and call for leniency in the case.
