In other news… A Nigerian businesswoman has raised concern online after allegedly receiving a ₦11.7 million tax assessment from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).

In a video shared on social media, she claimed that tax officials visited her store and calculated liabilities dating back to 2022. However, she insisted that her current brand name and business account were not operational at that time, questioning how the figure was arrived at.

The entrepreneur argued that her transactions did not begin in the year cited in the assessment and maintained that a proper review of her financial records would show that the business generated no revenue during that period. She also alleged that officials may have sourced her business details from Instagram, pointing to discrepancies in the recorded business name and address.

Following the development, she announced plans to begin charging 7.5 percent Value Added Tax (VAT) on all products going forward. She appealed to customers for understanding, explaining that the decision was necessary in light of the alleged tax demand.

“Guys, at this point, my fear is about to start coming to pass. Because tell me why NRS, the Nigerian Revenue Service, all these tax people, they walked into my store and slams me tax of 11.7 million era. This is not even a joking matter because now my fear of taking tax from my customers is starting to get to a point that I cannot avoid it. We now have to start taking VAT from everything we sell on this page. I have just been slammed 11.7 million error. I don’t know if you can see it right here. 11.7 million error. My fear is they went to calculate from 2022. As in 2020, I did not even open this. This page, before I was visiting my previous page, they had to rebrand and change the name. I did not register this business page in 2022. I did not even open our business account in 2022. How did they come to the completion of this figure, 11.7 million era? In 2022, they have not even started running this particular brand name. Where did they want me to get 11.7 million? How much are they sell? 11.7 million era. Business owners have to, you guys have to start being careful. Because I am 99.9% sure that they found me on Instagram. Because the way the address is written, every single thing I can bet it with my life that it is through Instagram. This is my address, Becky Luxury, my address and everything. Because how did they even get, even my account name doesn’t carry with just Becky Logie. If you are a customer, you know that our account name is not just, there is something attached to it. But what it just says is Becky Logie. So they found the business name on Instagram and they just wrote something and they just bring it. Because if you check, if they actually did check my account, they will see that I did not start transactions with my account in 2022. So I don’t understand why. All I just know is you start charging VAT. So, by the time I’m posting this video, every price that is before this video, when I’m going to start charging 7.5% for VAT, I can’t help it. Please, let’s just try to understand. Thank you.”
