A video capturing bundles of naira notes being sprayed on well-known singer Dauda Kahutu Rarara, popularly called Rarara, during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s visit to Adamawa State has sparked widespread reactions online.
The president was in Adamawa on Monday, February 16, for a one-day official engagement where he inaugurated several projects and praised Governor Umaru Fintiri for his administration’s efforts.
However, the focus of the visit quickly shifted after a clip surfaced showing a woman dressed in an All Progressives Congress (APC) outfit stepping out from the crowd to spray N1,000 notes on Rarara while he performed his hit track “Omo Ologo” in the presence of the president.
As the video made the rounds on social media, many Nigerians expressed concern, questioning why such an act occurred at a formal government function, especially at a time when authorities have intensified efforts to curb naira abuse.
Several commentators urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate the incident.
Under Nigerian law, acts such as spraying, stepping on, or mishandling the naira during celebrations are considered offences. Section 21 of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act prohibits the abuse of the national currency and prescribes penalties for offenders.
In addition, the Central Bank of Nigeria has continued to promote its Clean Note Policy, aimed at preserving the quality and durability of the naira by discouraging practices that damage or deface the currency.
