A Finnish district court has sentenced Simon Ekpa, a prominent agitator for the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to six years in prison for terrorism-related offences.

The verdict, delivered on Monday, September 1, by the Päijät-Häme District Court, found Ekpa guilty of inciting terrorism and engaging in the activities of a terrorist group.

According to Finnish newspaper Yle, the court determined that Ekpa had used his “significant social media following” to inflame tensions in Nigeria’s South-East between August 2021 and November 2024. The court further stated that he provided weapons, explosives, and ammunition to certain groups “through his network of contacts in the region” and had also encouraged his followers on social media platform X to carry out crimes in Nigeria.

Ekpa, a long-term resident of Lahti and a former local councillor, committed the offences from within Finland, which gave the court jurisdiction over the case.

Despite denying all charges during the proceedings, Ekpa was also convicted of aggravated tax fraud and breaching provisions of the Attorneys Act.
