A 45-year-old man in Afghanistan has reportedly married a 6-year-old girl as his third wife after her parents gave her away in exchange for money.
According to Amu.tv, the incident sparked outrage after a disturbing photo of the man and the child standing together surfaced online, prompting the Taliban to intervene.
The marriage was reportedly arranged in Helmand province and was set to take place last Friday. However, authorities arrested both the groom and the girl’s father.
Although no formal charges were filed, the Taliban reportedly instructed the man to wait until the girl turns nine before he can take her into his home, local sources say.
This incident comes amid growing concerns over child marriages in Afghanistan. UN Women revealed last year that child marriages have risen by 25% following the Taliban’s ban on girls’ education in 2021, and that childbearing rates among young girls have also surged by 45% across the country.
