Angry protesters on Wednesday, August 2nd pulled down the gate of the National Assembly in the Federal Capital Territory.
President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero and Festus Osifo of the Trade Union Congress led the group protesting against the removal of subsidy on petrol nationwide.
The organized labor leaders had urged security personnel stationed at the legislative building to open the gates so that the enraged employees might vent their anger, but they refused.
This infuriated the demonstrators, who then tore down the gates and forced their way into the assembly facility to vent their rage.
Protesters are currently assembled on the grounds of the National Assembly, while stern-looking security personnel watch on.
When he learned that protesters had invaded the legislative building, Senate President Godswill Akpabio immediately convened a closed-door session with senators and announced that the red chamber had formed a three-man committee to meet with the protesters at the National Assembly.
Ali Ndume, Senate Chief Whip from Borno South Senatorial District, led the committee. The Senate also determined to meet with the NLC and TUC leadership as soon as possible to find an acceptable solution to the current deadlock.
Ndume, together with Senators Ireti Kingibe and Tony Nwoye, later met with the demonstrators on the premises.
