Rivers Assembly Initiates Impeachment Proceedings Against Governor Fubara

  • The Rivers State House of Assembly has begun impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, escalating a prolonged political crisis.
  • The move could result in his removal from office if lawmakers secure the necessary support.

The Rivers State House of Assembly has initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara in a development that marks a new phase in the long-running political crisis in the oil-rich state.

The process began on Thursday when members of the state legislature moved to begin formal proceedings that could lead to the governor’s removal from office. If successful, the motion would see Fubara ousted by the state parliament.

The impeachment initiative follows months of tension between the governor and sections of the Rivers political establishment. Previous attempts to remove Fubara from office began in 2025, when notices of gross misconduct were served, accusing him of actions that lawmakers said undermined the constitution and frustrated legislative functions.

The crisis has at times drawn national attention. In March 2025, President Bola Tinubu declared a six-month state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending both the governor and the House of Assembly amid escalating stand-offs between the executive and legislative arms of government.
