Rev. Omolehin Raises Alarm as Half of World’s Richest Pastors Are Nigerians

  • Speaking during a meeting with fellow pastors, Omolehin cited a recent report by the World Council of Churches which reveals that five of the world’s ten richest pastors are Nigerians, yet none of the world’s ten richest churches is based in Nigeria.

Popular Kwara State clergyman, Reverend Isaac Omolehin, has voiced strong concern over what he describes as a troubling trend in Nigeria’s religious space.

Speaking during a meeting with fellow pastors, Omolehin cited a recent report by the World Council of Churches which reveals that five of the world’s ten richest pastors are Nigerians, yet none of the world’s ten richest churches is based in Nigeria.

“Is it not scary that the World Council of Churches released papers about the state of the Nigerian church — that out of the 10 richest pastors in the world, five of them are Nigerians, but out of the 10 richest churches in the world, there’s no Nigerian church? It’s worrisome, it calls for concern,” he told the gathering.

Highlighting the contrast with global church leadership, Omolehin pointed out that “The Roman Catholic Church is the richest church in the world, yet the pope has no private jet.”

His remarks add to the growing debate about transparency, accountability, and the balance between personal wealth and ministry work in Nigeria’s church system—a conversation that continues to spark reactions nationwide.
