The Nigerian LGBTQ+ community has been thrown into mourning following the death of a young queer man identified as Hilary, who reportedly lost his life after a brutal homophobic attack in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

According to activist Reverend Jide Macaulay, founder of House of Rainbow, Hilary was allegedly deceived into meeting his attackers under false pretenses before being subjected to severe violence. He later succumbed to his injuries.

In a statement shared online under the hashtag #JusticeForHilary, Macaulay condemned the incident and urged authorities to take immediate action to ensure justice is served. He described the loss as “another queer life taken from us far too soon,” highlighting the growing concern about the safety of LGBTQ+ Nigerians.

“This is the second reported case of violence against queer people in just two weeks. Two beautiful souls gone because of hate, fear, and the failure of our society to protect its own,” Macaulay wrote.

He called on the community to unite and continue speaking out against discrimination, saying, “We must keep fighting until every queer person can live free from fear.”

Hilary’s death has sparked widespread outrage on social media, with many Nigerians calling for accountability and stronger protections for sexual minorities.

Human rights groups have also renewed their calls for the government to investigate hate crimes and promote inclusivity and safety for all citizens, regardless of sexual orientation or identity.
