President Tinubu Arrives in Benue Following Brutal Attacks

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu arrived in Benue State on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, for a one-day condolence visit following the deadly attacks that claimed more than 100 lives in the Yelewata community and other parts of Guma Local Government Area.

The President, who canceled a previously scheduled visit to Kaduna, touched down in Makurdi early Wednesday. His itinerary includes stops at affected communities and a town hall meeting with stakeholders at the Government House Banquet Hall.

According to the presidency, the visit is meant to assess the humanitarian impact of the attacks, express solidarity with the victims, and reaffirm the federal government’s commitment to restoring peace and security in the region.

He is expected to be accompanied by Senate President Godswill Akpabio and several top security officials.

However, the visit has sparked backlash, as critics question the Benue State Government’s decision to organize a grand reception while mass burials are still ongoing. Many view the move as insensitive and poorly timed.

The visit comes amid mounting pressure on the federal government to address the escalating violence across Benue and other parts of the Middle Belt.
