British-Nigerian boxing champion Anthony Joshua has received a warm welcome in Ghana, where former President John Mahama offered him Ghanaian citizenship during a courtesy visit to the Jubilee House in Accra.

In addition to the citizenship offer, Mahama named Joshua the continental ambassador for boxing, recognizing his global impact and the inspiration he brings to young Africans.

“If you want us to give you a Ghanaian passport, we will,” Mahama said to applause. “We need people like him to help change the lives of young people. He will be our ambassador, not just for Ghana, but for Africa.”

Joshua was welcomed alongside Ghanaian boxing legend Azumah Nelson, Sports Minister Kofi Adams, and other top dignitaries. Mahama praised the former heavyweight champion, calling him a symbol of African excellence and a role model for the continent’s youth.

“After him, there will be a wave of boxers who will make Africa proud. You are an icon,” Mahama added.

Joshua, who arrived in Ghana on June 13, has since taken part in outreach activities, training sessions, and media engagements. His visit has also reignited friendly debates about the cultural rivalry between Nigeria and Ghana.

Speaking at Jubilee House, Joshua admitted that Ghana hadn’t initially been part of his travel plans largely due to the strong national pride he often encounters in Nigeria.

“Coming to Ghana actually wasn’t on my agenda,” he said jokingly. “Because, for some reason, everyone in Nigeria puts Nigeria above Ghana. But I’m here now, and I’m looking around like they’ve been lying to me.”

The comment drew laughter and applause, highlighting the good-natured rivalry between the two nations.

Joshua also expressed deep appreciation for Ghana’s warm hospitality and infrastructure:
“I’m impressed with your beautiful country its amazing culture, the hospitality, the airport, the organisation. I can’t wait to go back and tell everyone how beautiful this place is.”
