Tension flared in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Tuesday as students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, launched a protest against the state government’s decision to rename the institution.

The protest caused significant gridlock along the busy Sango-Eleyele Road, with students blocking both entrances to the school and halting vehicular movement in and out of the area. Commuters were left stranded for hours as major access routes were disrupted.

The students’ outrage followed Governor Seyi Makinde’s recent announcement renaming the school after the late Chief Omololu Olunloyo, a former governor of old Oyo State and the first Ibadan indigene to hold that office. Olunloyo passed away recently at the age of 89.

Students, however, rejected the move, calling it a needless change that disregards the institution’s longstanding identity. Many described it as an attempt to rewrite the institution’s legacy without adequate consultation.

Witnesses reported that campus gates were locked and nearby roads obstructed by demonstrators, forcing many motorists and pedestrians to divert.

As of the time this report was filed, security agencies had yet to comment on the situation or release an official statement.
