The Vice Chairman of Uyo LGA in Akwa Ibom State, identified as Hon. Udeme Ukai recently empowered his constituents with bicycles and palm tree ropes.

While some social media users have condemned the ‘humanitarian’ act, however Facebook user Iniabasi Asuquo who shared photos of the gifts the Vice Chairman of Uyo LGA gave his constituents, said he did it out of love.

He wrote;

I have read so many unpleasant commentaries about the “empowerment programme” reportedly done by one Hon. Udeme Ukai who is the Vice Chairman of Uyo LGA. I have known Hon. Udeme Ukai right from when I was in primary school in Oyigbo, Rivers State and I can tell you that he did this out of love to encourage and support these men. I might not be in the same political party with him before commending his efforts. To me, there is nothing wrong with what Hon. Udeme Ukai did. I am a village man and as one who had contested for the position of Chairman in my LGA, I had series of interactions with those at the grass root and you will be surprised to know that this is all most of them need to provide food for their families and pay fees for their children.

I met a man in my village then and all he asked from me was a fishing net to enable him continue his fishing job and as you read this, you need to see how this man keep singing my praises just because I gave him a fishing net of less than #10,000. You may ask “no be ordinary fishing net?” But to the man, it is not ordinary because it is from that net he feeds his family and with that net, he will never go begging. One told me he needs #8000 to start selling dog meet and I got him a dog and one year later, he is still in the business of selling dog meet and helping himself with whatever he is making from it. Funny as this may sound, it is the reality and the simple truth.

Sometimes we just have to drop these party sentiments and face realities. APC supporters in Akwa Ibom State should know that these items to those that got them are worth more than a car gift to them. Even though I am not in support of taking pictures of this and making it public to score cheap political points, I think Hon. Udeme Ukai should be encourage to do more of these instead of buying used cars to those who can’t even fuel them all in the name of empowerment as we see politicians do in our state.
