Who Is Awwal Zubairu Gambo?

Vice Admiral Gambo, born on April 22, 1966, in Kano State, served as Chief of Naval Staff from January 2021 to June 2023. He joined the Navy in 1984, specializing in Underwater Warfare with a subspecialization in Intelligence.

Education and Professional Background

Gambo holds a PhD and Master’s degree in Transport Management from Ladoke Akintola University. He is also a fellow of several professional bodies in management, shipping, safety, and diplomacy.

Service and Achievements

During his career, Gambo served as Director of Procurement at the Defence Space Administration and Commander of the Directorate of Naval Intelligence Annex.

As Chief of Naval Staff, he was credited with reducing piracy incidents in the Gulf of Guinea and received honors including the ECOMOG Peacekeeping Medal and the Admiralty Medal.
