Former SGF Babachir Lawal says the criteria for choosing presidential candidates have changed since the 2023 election, meaning his 2027 picks may differ.
Speaking on Channels TV, Lawal, who supported Peter Obi in 2023, said, “They say a day in politics is long. Things have changed. The parameters we used to evaluate our candidate in 2023 are going to be different this time. Things have moved on, so we’ll see when we get there. We’ll see how it goes.”
He also claimed Obi was the “true winner” of the 2023 election.
On 2027, Lawal stressed the north must back a candidate who understands and will address its issues. He noted a new coalition, the Nigerian People’s Consultative Political Forum (North), has been formed to promote regional unity.
“The idea is that we get together and bring unity to this north. There is disunity among us, and we analyse what this disunity means, what causes it, and how we can ameliorate it, We agreed that we must vote as a bloc. If we don’t vote as a bloc, we will not be able to achieve our goals.” he explained.
Lawal said the group has decided to unite under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to negotiate power, backing any 2027 candidate—northerner, southerner, or otherwise—who commits to solving the north’s problems.
He named Rotimi Amaechi, Peter Obi, and Atiku Abubakar as possible contenders, stressing that Nigeria’s next leader should be chosen beyond party or ethnic lines.
