Peter Obi Slams Tinubu’s Planned 12-Day Foreign Trip, Calls It Insensitive to Nigeria’s Crises

  • In a statement on Thursday via X, Obi questioned the need for the trip, noting Tinubu had recently met Brazil’s president and should instead visit crisis-hit states.
  • He also cited Tinubu’s week-long stay in St. Lucia before the BRICS Summit as another example of unnecessary foreign travel.

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s planned 12-day trip to Japan and Brazil, calling it insensitive to Nigeria’s worsening economic hardship, insecurity, and other challenges.

In a statement on Thursday via X, Obi questioned the need for the trip, noting Tinubu had recently met Brazil’s president and should instead visit crisis-hit states. He also cited Tinubu’s week-long stay in St. Lucia before the BRICS Summit as another example of unnecessary foreign travel.

Obi urged the President to cut down on lengthy overseas trips and focus more on touring Nigeria to address citizens’ concerns firsthand.

“What our nation needs now is the security of lives and property, economic stability, and ensuring that our people have food on their tables. Nigerians know our huge problems cannot be solved overnight, but they want to see 100% effort and tireless commitment,” Obi said.

Obi added that the President “must know that he’s not a tourist, but the Chief Executive of a troubled nation,” and should adopt strict work and travel schedules that reflect the urgency of the country’s crises.
