Peter Obi Slams FG’s ₦142bn Bus Terminal Project, Calls It Misplaced Priority

  • Peter Obi has criticised the Federal Government for approving ₦142 billion to build bus terminals across six geopolitical zones, saying the decision shows “lack of competence, lack of focus and poor leadership.”
  • He stressed that healthcare funding is under ₦100 billion in the 2024 budget, warning that with over 20 million Nigerians facing mental health challenges, the project is “not governance but a tragic irony.”

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticised the Federal Government’s approval of ₦142 billion for the construction of bus terminals across the six geopolitical zones, describing it as misplaced priority.

In a statement titled “₦142 Billion for Bus Terminals”, Obi said: “The difference between the success and failure of development in any nation is how you prioritise your scarce resources.

The recent announcement … further affirms the lack of competence, lack of focus and poor leadership.”

He noted that the combined 2024 budget for all teaching hospitals and federal psychiatric centres is under ₦100 billion, adding: “This is disturbing, considering that health … remains grossly underfunded. WHO recently reported that over 20 million Nigerians are living with mental health issues. This is not only a misplaced priority but a tragic irony of our country. This is not governance.”
