Peru’s First Female President Dismissed Following Corruption Investigations

  • Peru’s President Dina Boluarte has been removed from office after a late-night congressional vote supported by lawmakers across political parties.
  • Her impeachment follows ongoing investigations into corruption, bribery, and her alleged role in the deadly crackdown on protesters in 2022.
  • Boluarte, who became Peru’s first female president in 2022 after Pedro Castillo’s impeachment, was accused of moral incapacity to lead.

Peruvian President Dina Boluarte was removed from office on Thursday, October 9, following a late-night congressional vote that united parties across the political spectrum in calling for her ouster.

Boluarte, who has faced months of investigations over allegations including bribery and her role in a deadly 2022 protest crackdown, denied all wrongdoing and refused to attend the session. Lawmakers voted to remove her on the grounds of “permanent moral incapacity” to address organized crime in the country.

Congress President José Jerí Oré, 38, has assumed the role of interim president and is constitutionally required to call new elections.

Boluarte’s removal adds to Peru’s long history of political turmoil. Since 2000, at least seven presidents have faced prosecution or legal challenges over corruption and human rights violations, with one dying by suicide as police attempted to arrest him.

Boluarte became Peru’s first female president in 2022 after the impeachment of Pedro Castillo, who was arrested for attempting to dissolve Congress. However, her presidency was soon overshadowed by scandals, including allegations of accepting luxury gifts and using a presidential vehicle to transport a fugitive politician, as well as the deaths of more than 60 people during post-Castillo protests.
