The family of one of the students involved in a bullying incident at Igbinedion Education Centre has apologised to the victim and his family after a video of the assault went viral online.
The apology followed the circulation of a clip showing a group of male students attacking another student who was lying on the ground. In the video, the victim was repeatedly beaten and kicked while another student recorded the incident with a phone.
The footage sparked widespread reactions on social media and prompted the school management to take disciplinary action. The school later announced that the students involved in the incident had been expelled.
In a statement signed by Tim Asoro on behalf of the Asoro family, the parents said they felt shocked and deeply embarrassed after seeing the video involving their child.
They admitted that the behaviour shown in the footage was unacceptable and expressed shame that their son participated in an act that caused another student pain and fear.
The family apologised to the victim and his relatives, stating that no child should experience such treatment. They also said they could only imagine how frightening the incident must have been for the boy.
According to the statement, medical checks showed that the victim did not suffer physical injuries, although the family acknowledged that the incident may have caused emotional distress.
The parents said they have held serious discussions with their son since the video became public and noted that he has expressed regret over his actions.
They added that they are not defending what happened and insisted the behaviour was wrong. The family said they are taking steps, including counselling and guidance, to help the boy learn from the incident and become more responsible.
The family also stated that they respect the disciplinary action taken by the school and again apologised to the victim, his family, and the entire school community.
Meanwhile, the Edo State Police Command has asked the school to present the students involved so that investigations can begin.
Police authorities said those responsible may face legal action depending on the outcome of the investigation.
The incident has renewed public discussion about bullying in secondary schools across Nigeria.
