  • Rescue teams and military helicopters are working to evacuate survivors and recover victims.
  • The disaster is Afghanistan’s deadliest quake since 2022, worsening the country’s ongoing humanitarian crisis as international aid is yet to arrive.

More than 600 people have been confirmed dead and over 1,500 injured following one of the deadliest earthquakes to hit Afghanistan in recent years.

The magnitude 6.0 quake struck the eastern provinces of Kunar and Nangarhar, toppling homes and flattening three villages in Kunar. Officials reported 610 deaths in Kunar and 12 in Nangarhar.

Helicopters were deployed to airlift survivors from the rubble, while rescue teams continued combing remote villages for victims. Military teams carried out 40 flights, transporting more than 420 of the wounded and deceased as relief efforts intensified.

This disaster is Afghanistan’s deadliest quake since June 2022, when over 1,000 people were killed. The tragedy comes as the country battles severe humanitarian crises and dwindling foreign aid, with no international assistance yet received for the ongoing relief mission.
