A Nigerian lady has recounted a devastating experience in which what was meant to be a brief visit to her cousin’s home spiralled into tragedy, false accusations, and almost a year in detention.

In a TikTok video that has since gone viral, the woman, identified as @Awele, explained that she had gone to visit her cousin’s sister with the intention of staying for only three days.

Although she was prepared to leave as planned, her cousin convinced her to remain for one additional night a choice she says altered the course of her life.

She revealed that there had been a long-running dispute between her father and her cousin’s father, but stressed that it never affected her relationship with her cousin and had nothing to do with their closeness.

That same night, armed robbers reportedly invaded the house and demanded their mobile phones.

According to her account, she handed over her phone immediately, while her cousin refused, saying she had previously been robbed and was unwilling to lose another phone.

The confrontation soon escalated, and the attackers stabbed her cousin.

They rushed her to the hospital, where she remained for two days as they hoped for her recovery. Tragically, she passed away on the third day.

Rather than uniting the family in grief, the incident took a troubling turn.

The victim’s parents allegedly accused the woman of masterminding the attack, insisting she had been sent to kill their daughter because of the unresolved family conflict.

As a result, she was arrested and spent 11 months in detention. During that period, she missed her graduation, and her family faced severe financial hardship while borrowing money to pursue her legal defence.

She said the most heartbreaking moment for her was seeing her father break down in tears throughout the ordeal.
