Peter Obi has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu following his remarks about lack of electricity during a visit to Jos, reigniting debate over Nigeria’s power supply and past campaign promises.

Former Anambra State governor Peter Obi has reacted to recent remarks by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu concerning electricity supply during a visit to Jos, Plateau State.

According to Obi, Tinubu had, during the 2023 presidential campaign, made a pledge to Nigerians, saying, “If I don’t give you constant electricity in four years, don’t vote for me for a second term.”

Referencing the current state of power supply in the country, Obi noted that Nigeria’s electricity generation remains below 4,000 megawatts on average, while tariffs have increased. He further stated that Nigeria’s per capita electricity consumption is significantly lower than the African average.

The comments followed Tinubu’s brief stopover in Jos on Thursday, April 2, 2026, where he visited families affected by the recent attack in the area.

During the visit, the president reportedly remarked on the lack of electricity at the airport, saying, “You have no light here, I fly out in ten minutes.”

Obi criticised the situation, suggesting it reflects broader concerns about power supply and leadership priorities in the country.

He stated, “At a time when Nigerians are enduring days without power, our leaders cannot even stay a few minutes without it.”

The former presidential candidate concluded by calling for accountability and improved governance, adding, “Now is the time to stop incompetent leaders… A new Nigeria is possible.”
