- In a post on X, Obaseki described the judgment as a threat to Nigeria’s democracy, insisting that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, and his running mate, Osarodion Ogie, were the rightful winners of the September 21, 2024, governorship election.

Former Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has expressed strong disapproval of the Supreme Court’s ruling that upheld the election of Senator Monday Okpebholo as Governor of Edo State.
In a post on X, Obaseki described the judgment as a threat to Nigeria’s democracy, insisting that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, and his running mate, Osarodion Ogie, were the rightful winners of the September 21, 2024, governorship election.
“But unfortunately, and most surprisingly, all the courts have ruled against us,” he said.
Obaseki acknowledged the binding nature of the verdict despite strong disagreement.
“Although we strongly disagree with the decision of the Supreme Court, as adherents to the rule of law, we are bound by their verdict,” he said.
He stated that the PDP pursued justice through all legal channels, including the Election Tribunal and Court of Appeal, but was ultimately unsuccessful. While acknowledging the authority of the Supreme Court’s decision, Obaseki warned that the conduct of the election and the judiciary’s endorsement of the outcome pose a serious risk to the nation’s democratic values.
He urged Edo people to remain hopeful and faithful, trusting that divine justice will eventually prevail.
