A serving member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Jennifer Elohor, has spoken out about her ordeal after a viral video captured the moment she was brutalized by operatives of the Anambra State Vigilante Group.

Recall that Elohor was stripped and manhandled at her residence by members of the group, who many have described as “power-drunk.”

Speaking in an interview with media personality Aprokoking on Wednesday, Elohor recounted that the incident happened on July 13, around 5 p.m., at the lodge where she and some fellow corps members were accommodated.

According to her, they were inside when they suddenly heard persistent banging on their door.

“At first, we thought it was our neighbours’ door because it’s a three-storey building with several flats. But the knock became louder and more aggressive, so I decided to check. Before I could reach the door, it was kicked open,” she said.

She revealed that a masked man wielding a gun barged into the room without any form of identification or uniform.

“At first, I thought it was an armed robber until he ordered all of us to come outside. I tried to explain that we were corps members and even suggested showing our NYSC identity cards. My colleagues also presented theirs, but the men ignored us,” she narrated.

Elohor added that the men ransacked their room, seized their phones and laptops, and soon turned violent.

“They pushed us downstairs, almost shoving me down the staircase. They kept asking what gave me the right, as a woman, to challenge them. It was when we got outside that we saw their vehicle and discovered they were from the Anambra Vigilante Group,” she said.

She further explained that when they pleaded to reach their lodge proprietor or NYSC officials to clarify their identity, the men became more aggressive.

“They beat me, tore my clothes, and even hit one of my colleagues with an iron rod for pleading on my behalf. They forced me into their vehicle, pressing my neck, slapping me, and threatening to smash our phones if we contacted anyone,” she recounted.

A video, published by PUNCH Online on Tuesday, showed the vigilante operatives armed with guns storming the corps members’ residence, accusing them of being internet fraudsters despite being shown NYSC uniforms and ID cards. In the footage, Elohor was seen being beaten mercilessly while crying out for help.

The video has since sparked nationwide outrage, with many Nigerians demanding justice and condemning the actions of the vigilante group.

Reacting to the backlash, the Anambra State Government confirmed that the officers involved have been identified, arrested, and dismissed from service.
