- Veteran actress Bimbo Akintola expresses concerns about the Nigerian film industry’s current state.
- She believes the industry has lost its original passion for acting.
- Akintola notes a growing focus on physical appearance, makeup, and cosmetic procedures.

Veteran Nollywood actress Bimbo Akintola has opened up about her concerns regarding the current state of the Nigerian film industry, expressing that it has drifted away from the passion that once defined it.
In a conversation with fellow actress Ayo Adesanya, Akintola highlighted what she sees as an increasing emphasis on looks, makeup, and cosmetic procedures, rather than genuine commitment to acting.
She pointed out that, in contrast to the early days of Nollywood when actors were driven by a desire to tell meaningful stories many of today’s performers seem more focused on glamour and outward appearances.
Recalling her beginnings in the industry alongside legends such as Sola Sobowale and Joke Silva, Bimbo shared memories of working long, unpaid hours, often overnight, with a singular focus on the craft. She emphasized that back then, the priority was authentic storytelling and realism, rather than fame or flashy appearances.
“Now, people are saying, ‘My makeup isn’t right for this, and I can’t wear this.’ Is that what the film is about? We are more concerned about our outfits and how we look. This is why, generally, there is a spark in BBL. It is now about looks and not content or what one has. Looks will fade no matter what you do,“ she stated.
