Former Aviation Minister and newly appointed ambassador, Femi Fani-Kayode, has sparked reactions online after making pointed comments about Nigeria’s opposition parties during a televised interview.
On the program, Fani-Kayode dismissed the African Democratic Congress (ADC), labeling it as a collection of politicians more interested in power than in genuine governance. He stated, “I don’t consider the ADC a political party. I see it as a group of individuals desperate for power, discredited, and incapable of moving this country forward.”
He also critiqued Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the previous election, remarking, “Looking at someone like Peter Obi as president is concerning God forbid. I won’t elaborate further, but God forbid.”
Despite his criticisms, Fani-Kayode expressed respect for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, saying, “I respect Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. He served as vice president, but I think it’s time to let others continue the work.”
On the other hand, he commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for implementing significant reforms, adding, “The president has performed well. He has initiated three key reforms, and I believe he should be given the opportunity for a second term.”
Fani-Kayode argued that Nigeria’s opposition parties have lost focus and effectiveness, attributing their decline to internal conflicts. “The opposition in Nigeria has collapsed. ADC is part of the problem. There is no functional opposition because they don’t even know how to be one. When we were in power with the PDP, APC provided a strong opposition,” he said.
Reflecting on past political contests, he continued, “They defeated us in 2015, but can you compare the APC in opposition then to the disorganized groups we have now? They call themselves the opposition, but they are not effective.”
He further addressed the recent wave of defections to the ruling party, emphasizing that the opposition is to blame. “When people complain that everyone is joining the APC, it’s not the president’s fault or ours. It’s the opposition’s responsibility,” Fani-Kayode explained.
Concluding his remarks, he criticized opposition leaders for their lack of action, stating, “They spend their time quibbling, fighting among themselves, instead of keeping the government accountable. They are supposed to hold the government to account, but instead, they are idle, bickering, and failing in their duties.”
