“No Civilian Is Allowed”- Nigeria Police Reaffirm Ban on Assault Rifles After Arrest

A yet-to-be-identified man has been arrested by the Nigeria Police Force for allegedly being in possession of a prohibited firearm, reportedly an AK-47 rifle, which he claimed was for personal protection.

According to police sources, the suspect was apprehended during a routine security operation. Upon interrogation, he reportedly admitted that he acquired the weapon to defend himself amid growing security concerns in his area.

Reacting to the incident, a police spokesperson reiterated the legal stance on firearm possession in the country, stating:

“No man is allowed in this country to be in possession of prohibited firearms for your personal protection. Nigerians aren’t allowed to own assault rifles and pistols.”

The police emphasized that under Nigerian law, certain categories of firearms, including automatic weapons like the AK-47, are strictly prohibited for civilian ownership, regardless of the reason provided.
